About

TSUKINOI SHUZOTEN

On the Pacific coast of northern Japan, a torii gate stands on a rocky outcrop in the sea, marking the spot where gods Ōnamuchi and Sukunahikona—protector of sake brewers—are said to have once descended. Inspired by this sacred location, Tsukinoi Brewery was founded in 1865 near Ōarai, originally named Matsumaeya. One moonlit night, captivated by the moon’s reflection on the waves, the founder renamed it “Tsukinoi,” meaning “the well of the moon.” Ōarai, a bustling fishing port, holds a deep tradition of fishermen drinking sake before and after their voyages. For over 160 years, Tsukinoi has been part of that enduring culture.

HARMONY WITH THE LAND AND NATURE

Tsukinoi sake believe that truly distinctive sake comes from embracing the natural bounty of our region and harnessing the unique qualities of local ingredients. Much like winemakers who aim to express the character of their terroir, we strive to reflect the essence of our land in every bottle. Just as a vegetable grown in open soil under the sun and rain carries the flavor of its environment, sake should embody its place of origin. Understanding and respecting the region is essential. By working in harmony with the land and nature, we can create sake with unparalleled depth and authenticity.

Origin

THE ŌARAI REGION

The Ōarai region, with its mild coastal climate and pure, moderately hard water rich in minerals, offers ideal conditions for sake brewing. At Tsukinoi Brewery, we steam carefully selected rice and allow natural yeast to thrive without artificial temperature control, following age-old methods in harmony with the seasons. The result is a truly unique sake—unfiltered, with golden hues and deep umami—reflecting the rich character of the local ingredients. Its natural buffering quality enhances any cuisine, whether enjoyed warm, chilled, or at room temperature. Tsukinoi is more than sake—it’s a gift of Ōarai’s terroir, crafted with reverence to nature and tradition.
